A training ride to Deep Cove in honour of my daughter, Melanie

Submitted by Tom Evans

A training ride honouring my daughter, Melanie, who died 11 years ago today. Susan and I rode out to Deep Cove for lunch - Melanie loved to eat. We also talked a lot about Eva who died one month ago today. Two amazing women who will always be an inspiration to both of us. The life lessons that they taught us will never be forgotten. Ali and Rina are always in our thoughts and prayers, the joy and determination that they live with each day makes our little trek to Banff seem small. We need all of you on our team as we fight Cystic Fibrosis, and the way you can do that is by donating some money!! You can go to www.gearup4cf.org and follow the links. FLY FREE LITTLE ONE! TAWBOKBANANA!

A Saturday training ride in pouring rain - and paceline cycling

Submitted by Stan

The sun is shining this Sunday afternoon. It sure would have been nice if it had been yesterday morning.

I was up at 5:30 AM, and, having laid out all of my cycling gear the night before, made it out the door in time to ride out to meet up with my friends in "Le Peloton", a great cycling group I've been riding with for the past four years.  I guess misery loves company.  It was pouring rain by the time I arrived on my bike at 8th and Blanca at 6:45 AM.  Are we nuts, or what??? Trying to keep from getting too cold, we set out immediately for Richmond, in the vain hope that perhaps the weather would be a bit more tolerable riding South.    By the time we made it to Iona, where my friend David took my picture here, it was clear we were in for a long, wet ride.

Stan at Iona, near Vancouver Airport-->

Actually, as long as you are prepared for it, riding in the rain is not too bad.  You just have to keep moving to stay warm, and try to think of other things.  Riding together with friends makes a huge difference. There's lots of things to talk about when you're on the road.  Remarkably, our overall moving average, despite some rather strong headwinds, was just over 27 kph over the entire journey.  How did we do it? By riding in what is known as a paceline, or 'double echelon'.  This form of group riding (a group riding like this is also known as a 'Peloton', which is why my regular cycling group is called that) is absolutely invaluable for long distance cycling, such as what we'll be doing in June.

Here's a diagram of how it's done:

The idea is that the inner line moves just a little bit faster than the outer line. The lead cyclist then crosses over and falls back, so that everyone gets a brief turn at the front.  Riding consistently when in close formation is absolutely essential. You must NEVER hit the hand brakes - every action must be predictable, as, in order to take advantage of the aerodynamics of group riding you are usually no farther than two feet from the back wheel of the cyclist ahead of you. Since visibility is limited, cyclists at the front use hand signals if there are obstructions to look out for.   That said, if you know and can trust the people you are riding with, and everyone looks out after everyone else, group riding is safe, enjoyable, and a tremendous energy saver.  Cyclists riding in a group formation can save up to 40% energy over an individual riding on their own - a huge bonus when you are riding long distances, especially over long relatively flat stretches and against strong headwinds.

The key is, when group riding, YOU MUST NOT RACE.  There are no 'winners'.  Everyone rides together, and helps the other to conserve energy.  Sure, we like to, and almost always do a 'sprint', or fast, short race, usually at the end of the ride when the final goal is in sight. But when riding in a paceline, the goal is to keep together and maintain an easy-to-manage pace that helps to ensure no one is dropped. I would strongly encourage anyone on the GearUp4CF tour who has not done group riding before to practice riding in paceline during training.  It's great fun, and hugely beneficial.  If we can do this as a GearUp4CF team, it will help everyone on the ride.

For more information about paceline group riding technique and some useful tips, click here .

At any rate, we rode together, covering about 80 km, until we stopped for coffee around 10:00 AM. Then, one by one, the guys started breaking off to head for home.

By the time I headed out to UBC, I was on my own. Thankfully, by then, the clouds started to break up, and the sun started to peek through the clouds.

<-- a view from my bike, heading along the UBC endowment lands (don't worry, I stopped to take this photo!).  Note the little patch of blue sky on horizon. It was so nice to see sunshine after such a rain-soaked morning. My Garmin GPS, an amazing little device, is in the foreground. It plots the exact route shown in the map below, as well as elevation gain, speed, cadence (pedal stroke rate), temperature and heart rate through a wireless receiver.

The final loop past Locarno Beach was beautiful, I had to stop to take a few pictures before ascending the big hill up Spanish Banks (a nice change from the flats of Steveston).

Click on photos for a larger view-->

Then it was a fast ride down Marine Drive, hitting over 40 kph down the slight, -2% downhill grade towards 41st before heading home.

Final distance, just over 120 km.  Next week, we're heading for the mountains!

My route today. More details of the ride can be found at http://connect.garmin.com/activity/31249725 -->

BTW, donations are pouring in for GearUp4CF. I'll publish results to date in my next Journal entry.  Thank you so much for your support, it really means a lot both to me, and to Roman, Madison and Hailey, the kids I am riding for.  I am delighted to announce that the elementary school they attend is organizing a GearUp4CF fundraiser to support our ride. I'll be going to the school, taking my bike, to tell over 200 kids about CF and why we are doing the ride during a school assembly being planned in early June.  We're so excited about this!

Speaking of donations, Kitty Chavarie had a great weekend during her fundraiser on Saturday.  We still have some work to do, however, before we can reach our official team goal of $90,000, posted on our Gearup4CF web site at www.gearup4cf.org . We're only about a third of the way. If you have not contributed, and would like to, just click on the name of any of the riders in this Journal, and send in a donation on their 'official' bio page, maintained by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  Or click on www.gearup4cf.org and select your favorite rider there.

Thanks again for your support!

Gear up silent auction success story in Chemainus

Submitted by Kitty Chavarie

WOW what a night we had.  Sold out all 100 tickets to our beer and burger and then some.  My group of volunteers ran the games, tickets and silent auction like a dream...Total raised so far is $2500.  which brings me over the $5000. mark in my fundraising.  This feels great.  Tom Evans joined us and helped fill in the gaps after my nervous speech of thanks. I appreciated him being there in many ways (besides his nagging me on our ride about all the stuff I am doing less than right!)  I am good with it, and need the help as I ride mainly alone with just lots of energy and little "road bike" knowledge.

Sandra Smith is my inspiration and every pedal stroke and dollar raised has her in mind.  This is a new experience for me which is very personal and fulfilling.  I can't wait to meet her at the end of our ride.

All I can say is cheers to volunteers, friends, and friends of friends..don't know where we would be
without these special people.  I am loving this journey...thanks to all my supporters and cheerleaders
out there

Sincerely,  Kit

THANK YOU!!! Our Auction and Raffle yesterday was a resounding success

Submitted by Susan, Tom and Stan

What a day. The Pinsky family home was transformed yesterday with dozens and dozens of quality, donated items, weekend get-aways, gift certificates to fine restaurant and services, that filled tables set out in the family living room, dining room, halls, family room, and even the kitchen. Every item was meticulously cataloged and displayed by Kathy Martin, resulting in a beautiful presentation.
Wine was ready in ice coolers, beautifully presented hors d'oeuvres were arranged, name labels were set up, and then... and then we waited.  At four o'clock pm, the door bell rang.

And then, the fun began.

Friends, neighbors, fellow riders, and many others stopped by. Before we knew it the home was buzzing with friendly conversation, while well over a hundred and twenty people "secretly" outbid each other in our silent auction,

At one point, during the live auction, the enthusiasm was so infectious that wives started  bidding against their husbands!  Rina, Max and Leona's daughter and the girl Tom is riding for, pulled the main raffle ticket - where we gave away 73 bottles of fine wine, in one huge raffle, all donated by participants coming to our event.

Thank you, to our wonderful volunteers: to Lisa Brennan, to Susan's daughter Janet, to Luke Bensler, Shannon Evans, Julia Heyes, Vanessa Holland, Kate Butcher and Tova Pinsky, who were such a tremendous help greeting and serving our guests, and to Leona and Max Pinksy who graciously donated their home for the afternoon.

And a special,  HUGE thank you to Kathy Martin for incredible organizational work she did, and for donating the beautiful painting entitled "Dedicated Love" . The title pretty much sums up the entire event. We were overwhelmed by the support we received from everyone who attended.

At the end of the day,  the auction and raffle made $12,785 in support of Cystic Fibrosis research

Our heartfelt thanks goes to all of you who who helped to make this day one to remember, and a significant milestone on our way this June to the Canadian Rockies.

Things are going well here in Chemainus.  My friends supported me with a garage sale/hotdog stand at my house last Saturday; we raised $600.  The goods were almost exclusively donated! It was a great way to advertise and raise awareness about the ride.  It was a lot of work, but was also lots of fun.  This Saturday we host our Beer and Burger-silent auction night. Selling 100 tickets ahead of time is no easy feat, but it has given me the opportunity to knock on doors and meet more neighbours than ever.  I have received a great response everywhere due to the article that was written in our local newspapers that made folks aware that I am doing this ride.  This little community is very supportive and they never fail to inspire me to ride more because everyone believes I can do this.  I feel them cheering me on when I am many kilometres away doing this "training thing".  I don't even know what cadence means, but I am trying hard to "get it".  Technicalities are not my strength, but getting the job done is; so, I am harnessing that energy instead of intellectualizing the "how to ride" details.

I have a ride buddy now who spends time with me on Sundays and Mondays; she has done triathlons many years ago and is a strong rider.  She inspires me to pick up the pace by just trying to catch her.  I look forward to riding with a group and hope I can keep up with all the other riders at some level.  I have dedicated my ride to Sandra Smith.  She continues to inspire me with her emails and photos.  We have not met yet, but I sure hope we meet in Banff in June.  Sandra is on the wait list for a double lung transplant so keep her in your thoughts and prayers (her bio is on my site on Gear up). Keep healthy and happy!  We are all blessed in different ways.  Thanks to everyone for inspiring me to do bigger things than I would have ever dreamed of doing.

Love, Kitty

UPDATE: Riding has been great so far. My best ride has been 60 km; I average about 40 km a ride. My ride pal is wonderful! Her experience as a road rider really helps an old cruiser rider like me.

I was terrified of falling off my new Trek road bike by not un-clipping in time.  Mark, at my cycle shop said it is not a matter of IF you fall but WHEN!!! Well that tipped me off and I have been scared ever since.

Well I have done it... I was on a fundraiser ride on Thetis Island for 2 little boys who were just diagnosed with CF (the Elijah Project). Halfway through the ride, we all stopped to visit the First Aid-Fireman (this is where I decided to try and walk with one shoe still clipped). While I scrambled back to my feet the First Aid guys asked me if I was ok. I reassured them that I was, but would like my ego back intact please!!! The bruises have all faded to a glorious green-yellow tinge! - All is well.

Don't forget our Beer & Burger night at our local pub this Saturday, April 24th. There is a Silent Auction to follow. We have great donations that are making marketing this fun and easy. Call or email me if you know anyone here on the island who would like to join us!

Training with Team Benson

Submitted by Brian Benson

Training Day Two - We decide to take the tandem to the Seymour Demonstration forest in North Vancouver.  Two friends were going to join us for leisurely ride.  They got lost on the way there so we soaked up the sun for an hour.  I saw this as a relaxation exercise.  Margaret thought we should have been riding for the hour while we waited. Hmmm.....two days on a tandem.....is this any indication of how our ride will go.

The ride went well.  I wore my mountain bike shorts which do not have any chamois or padding in them.  Let’s just say I’ll go find my road cycling shorts before our next ride. The weather was spectacular, clear sky, snow in the mountains and tons of people out enjoying the day.  Our friends quite enjoyed drafting us on the tandem.  After a while our competitive instincts took over and we put the hammer down.  Lost them. (granted they were on mountain bikes that are much slower than road bikes) So much for our leisurely ride.  Once we hit the hills they caught us. We anticipated this.  After two trips in and out of the forest we enjoyed a picnic lunch topped off with some Girls Guide cookies.  Girl Guide cookies are considered carbo loading aren’t they?

We are looking forward to getting out on a training ride with the other riders one day soon!!!

GearUp4CF Campaign 2010 is officially underway

Submitted by Stan Shaw

For those of you who have just started to read our Rider's Journal for 2010, welcome!  With only just over two months to go, we are training hard for the ride now.  This means numerous short rides, intensive gym or cycle training at least three times a week now, and a long ride, 100 km or more, on the weekend that includes more and more hill climbing. By the time June approaches we'll be climbing two or three mountains (Cypress, Grouse and Seymour) as part of our Saturday morning training rides.

In the meantime, fundraising is picking up as well.  For those of you who live in the Vancouver area, Susan Edmison, Tom Evans  and I,  are hosting a special silent auction at one of our rider's homes near Granville and King Edward on:

Saturday, April 17th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM

In addition to many great items - art, books, jewellery, liquor, gift baskets, floral arrangements, weekend get-aways and fitness packages - we're  raffling off a large collection of fine wine. By the time Saturday arrives, we  expect to have over 40 bottles, all being raffled off as one item - enough to complement any wine cellar.

This will be a fun event!  For more details, click here

UPDATE APRIL 14th: We now have an on-line Auction Catalogue.

In the meantime, every donation counts. If you cannot make it on Saturday, please consider donating right away to your favorite rider - or riders.

Remember, while each of us must raise at least $5,000 on behalf of the kids we're riding for, we're riding as a team and it's really the total amount of funds that goes to Cystic Fibrosis research that's important to us.

My new poster, being sent to friends and family-->

So please give generously. In addition to receiving a tax deduction on the donations you give, you will also experience the wonderful satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to make a real difference - bringing hope - to the kids we are riding for.

- Stan

Cycling to the Rockies for CF - on a Tandem Bike

Submitted by Brian Benson, Margaret Benson's husband, both of whom are riding on GearUp4CF this year

After a few days of going over our tandem bike, dusting it off (from lack of use for the last 9 years or so), oiling the chain and putting on new saddles we headed out for our first ride tonight in preparation of our 2 day journey.  Feeling guilty only partaking in the first 2 days I thought it was appropriate to do some hill climbing on day one.  Since we live in North Vancouver we have to ride hills no mater which way we go. What Margaret didn’t realize is I have this ability to find the up hills and somehow avoid most the down hills even though we start and finish at the same altitude. Amazing how that happens.

I’ve been known in the past to not take training seriously but for this ride the second day has been haunting me a bit.  Going on the flats and downhill on a tandem is pretty easy.  Going up hill is another story.  Day 2 from Harrison to Manning will be true test of our fitness and compatibility, from both a marriage and tandem-wise.  Mind you, after being married to her for 21 years, I suppose two days together on a tandem shouldn’t challenge our relationship too much should it???

So off we head tonight for some hill climbs.  Although we only rode a little over an hour, we rode up some of the steeper hills around our house.  Margaret  is more fit than I, but I was suspicious of her not sweating too much or breathing heavy.  Hmmmm......I wonder if she was pedaling.  (just kidding honey)  She did great.

Life with Margaret has been an adventure to say the least.  No matter what we do we manage to laugh at something. Rather, she laughs and I just shake my head.  It happened again tonight.  We stopped by the Stedman’s house to say hello.  They have a son with CF. No one was home so we got back on the bike.  As I straddled the bike, I had my right foot in my clip with my left foot firmly placed on the ground.  Margaret was struggling for some reason to get both her feet in the clips.  Her right foot was in, but she just could not get her left foot in. Margaret asked me to rotate the crank back a bit.  In frustration she said, “I’ve never had this much difficulty in reaching the left pedal before”......only to have her break into a hysterical laugh as some neighbors looked on......  “Hey Margaret” I said,  “That’s MY LEFT PEDAL you are trying to reach”.  Needless to say, she retreated to her own left pedal as we pushed onward.

I think these two days are going to be an adventure to say the least.

- Brian , riding with Margaret

Fit is everything

Submitted by Kitty Chavarie

Just yesterday I had a computerized fitting for my bike that changed things up so much I wouldn't have believed it if it was someone else's experience.  Two hours at Fort Street Cycle in Victoria, zillions of measurements, and my ride yesterday was virtually pain free (was experiencing pain between my shoulders, icy feet and well an area that was too hot to talk about that is better now!!). Makes me just want to ride all day to train like I need to but today was the stormiest day this year and I was afraid I would get blown off my bike then drown in a puddle!!

I am riding for a friend of a friend I met thru another friend. Sandie Smith of Calgary.  We are email friends so far and we are both enjoying our new relationship.

Sandie is waiting for a double lung transplant and I hope my emails cheer her up and distract her from the wait.  Her mother in law Sandra Smith (yes they have the same name) and I were walking around Victoria and in and out of shops when we came upon the most expensive new singlet at Lulu Lemon with the most amazing phrase on the front "Breathe Deeply, appreciate the moment".  It is a thing of beauty and so aprapo for our ride...but 58$ for a tiny jersey just seemed too steep. Well Sandra told the manager what I was doing in town (my bike fitting) and about the CF ride and well that young manager just gifted me the shirt!! WOW hey?  I will try and get a good photo of it to post as it is very neat how things like this just keep happening!!

I have had a few newspaper stories too and thru that folks are just coming up and congratulating
me and handing me money for the fund... next Saturday the 10th is our garage sale...will do
some photos there to share with you..cheers for today

Kitty

Easter Sunday - my Pacific Populaire 100 km training ride

Submitted by Stan Shaw

Thankfully, the dreadful windstorms over the past few days let up a bit, enough for me to participate in the first major cycling event of the spring season, the "Pacific Populaire".  This event is sponsored by the Randonneurs cycling club  . Now in its 15th year, hundreds of cyclists turned up for the ride, including some notable past GearUp4CF team members. I am so glad my friend Mike asked if I'd come today. It was great fun, despite some pretty strong headwinds out off River Road.  My official time for the 100km ride, which excludes a brief break at the control station, was 3:59 minutes. Not bad given Mike and I took it easy on the return leg heading out to UBC and back to the starting point along 16th avenue.

The route, mapped out here by my bike GPS unit, is similar to the one our GearUp4CF cycling team did a few weeks ago, though a bit longer.   From now until our big ride in June, most weekends will be filled with rides like this.

<--for more details of the ride, see http://connect.garmin.com/activity/28993994

Tomorrow, if the weather is good, some friends and I are heading up Cypress to work on some hills. As you can see on my GPS elevation chart shown here, there were only a few little ones on this ride. Hardly enough to be prepared for the mountain passes we'll be climbing, all too soon!
